DST vs. PES: Understanding Embroidery File Formats

Choose the embroidery file your machine supports and understand why color information can differ.

  1. Start with your machine

Check the formats listed in your machine manual. LT Lettering Studio offers Tajima DST and Brother PES export; the right choice depends on your machine, model, and workflow.

  2. Understand DST

DST carries machine stitch movements and control information such as color changes. It does not carry a dependable full thread color palette. A viewer may assign substitute colors.

  3. Understand PES

PES is associated with Brother and Baby Lock embroidery workflows and can include thread color information. Compatibility can vary by model and PES version; verify a sample file on your machine.

  4. Keep the editable project

Save your cloud project separately so you can change the lettering and arrangement later. Exporting a machine file does not preserve every editing control.

  5. Check before stitching

Compare the exported dimensions with your hoop. Check the sequence and thread choices in your machine software, then test the design before using your final material.
